The most exciting advance in many years is the use of intense pulsed light device that emits light in a blue and infrared wavelength (not ultraviolet).  This results in the destruction of bacteria that cause acne and a reduction in oil gland capacity.  Our practice has performed over 8,000 (as of mid-2007) treatments with this device, more than any other facility in the world.  This treatment reduces or eliminates the need for oral therapy, including antibiotics and accutane.  Combining this with a topical photsensitizing agent may drastically reduce the number and function of oil glands.
